December
The December Luncheon at the Town Club begins with Christmas songs by the Rosettes, our own singing group. Sylvia Whitworth accompanies the singers, who are Jo Ann Robertson, Josey O'Flynn, Beth Turcotte, Cherl Hinton, Ava Obermueller and Patsy Severin. After their beautiful songs, they had Christmas Carols printed at each table and we all joined in. What a wonderful way to begin Christmas!
Members also brought toys, which are under the tree for the Toys for Tots program. This program is carried on by the Marines, who came with boxes to load up our gifts. Sitting with President Karen Haug are Corporal Jimenez, Sergeant Garcia and Corporal Govea,
Sergeant Garcia accepts our toys and thanks us on behalf of the US Marine Corps.
Our Hearts and Hands Club collected gifts for military families and Danrak Tate from NAS CC is the coordinator for our Military Christmas Families. These are families who are not eligible for the Toys for Tots or other program, but who are still needy at Christmas time.
Our December Rose is Pat McAnear. Her husband, Jack, accompanies her. Pat has designed our Sanddollar for the past several terms, plus being the Past President. Her beautiful corsage is courtesy of ...

President Pat McAnear conducts business at the September Luncheon, held at the Town Club.
VP Karen Haug introduces our speaker, Police Chief Troy Riggs.
Chief Riggs brings Officer Theresa Lucich who is in Corpus shadowing the Chief for a month.. She celebrates her birthday today! The Chief spoke about his objective to have the police department be more proactive regarding crime and public safety versus being only reactive. Involvement with the citizens is one of the ways of achieving this focus as well as setting a mission with goals. The mission being to reduce crime, reduce the fear of crime and to enhance public safety. His major belief is that citizens have the right to know what crime is going on in the area. Like any major city burglaries, gang activity and drive by shootings are areas of focus. He was happy to report that crime in all 3 areas was down this year. He stressed the ways citizens can be involved: check out www.crimereports.com with real time information on crime in your area or neighborhood and now there will be a website that any citizen can go to to report a crime - www.citizenobserver.com. This website is where you can sign up to receive texts about emergencies such as for evacuation. He feels the more crime is reported, the more that can be done to address it. Citizens can always call 886-COPS to report crimes as well. He attributes the successes of the police department to knowing and utilizing the strengths of the officers. We left feeling the city is in good hands. Chief Riggs is not only a good leader he is approachable and an excellent public speaker.
Hears and Hands Chair Denise Parker announced that they will be working at the Thanksgiving Dinner at the Corpus Christi Women’s Shelter. She reminded us to save pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House. After December 1st we will be decorating the Ronald McDonald House for Christmas. Be sure and wear your NNL t-shirts while volunteering.

Liz Gordon wins the 50/50 at the September coffee.
August
Vice President Karen Haug introduces our speaker, John Metz, at the August Luncheon, which is held at the Town Club.
John speaks on Hurricane Preparedness. We are now at the peak of the hurricane season and might have gotten rather complacent, he says. As his slide states, "Out of sight, Out of mind" and "This could be our year for a major Hurricane!" He shows videos of storm surges from recent storms. The majority of casualties are from storm surges. Our seawall is 14' high and yet much of the city is below this level. Homes on Padre Island, Flour Bluff, Kings Crossing and the Lakes could be effected with high storm surges. (The Tsunami in Japan had surges that went over their 40' seawall!)
This slide shows that hurricanes that enter the Gulf of Mexico are more likely to hit the Texas coast than any other area. Louisiana is second.
President Pat McAnear conducts business following the program.
Joyce Seitz, President of the VIP Club, announces that the VIP Club's next luncheon will be Tuesday, October 25 at the Corpus Christi Country Club with a style show by Pilars. The luncheon cost will be $18 and all NNL members are invited.

July

Vice President Karen Haug introduces our speaker, Leah Pummill, from the Audubon Society, who spoke on "Birding in the Coastal Bend". Since Corpus Christi won the title of the "Birdiest City in the USA" for the 9th year in a row, we really enjoyed hearing about our birds and the Audubon activities. Leah gave a lively and informative talk as she answered questions from the audience.
Nancy Gray showed Leah this picture that she had taken the day before of 2 baby Mocking Birds opening their mouths to receive food from Mama Bird. Mama built a nest in one of her hanging baskets and the babies would open their mouths if you talked to them.

Pat gives Carol Littleton the Past Presidents pin and a gift certificate. We were all so glad to see Carol, who has moved away. Carol is an Advisor this term, however. With cell phones and e-mail, she can dish out advice from "afar"!

Linda Herrera wins the 50/50 money.
Denise Parker, the Chair of the Hearts and Hands Club, makes an announcement about the project of serving Thanksgiving Dinner to the Women's Shelter. She is asking for donations and volunteers to help cook and serve.
People donating money will receive one of these plates that say, "Generously donated to the Women's Shelter Thanksgiving by (the person's signature.)" Each one has a cute saying. This one says, "According to ancient Celtic legend, St. Patrick drove the calories out of Pecan Pie."
This one reads, "Mr. Gobbler suggests, 'Try oven-roasted Flamingo *** very tasty.' " Robin Bennett supplied the plates, which were left over from a past social. The committee is just too clever. What a great Fund Raising idea. Who could resist one of these cute plates and giving to a great cause.
June

TV Station, KIII, showed the NNL Flamingo, which was designed by Debbie Cannatella, on the news. It will be displayed at the Botanical Gardens from July 4th to labor Day. Go the the gardens and VOTE for our flamingo! The picture is too small to be very clear, but it is a flamingo couple moving, which is typical of NNL!

New member, Ann Davis, moved here from San Antonio, following many moves, both here and overseas.

Vice President Karen Haug introduces our programs, which is ...
... our very own Crystal Meade, Membership and Fundraising Director of the Texas State Aquarium. She now has a conflict on Thursday and has been unable to attend the luncheons.
